Makaibari Tea Estates proudly offers a tea it calls "Silver Needles".
On July 14, 2003, at a tea auction in Kolkata, India,
this tea set a record by fetching the highest trading price
for any tea in the 150-year history of tea making.
This record remains unbroken to this day, and
Silver Needles has thus been accorded a legendary status among teas.

Makaibari pays extra special attention to each factor
involved in the production of Silver Needles,
and it has thus adopted a lavish approach to the creation of this tea
in which it makes perfect use of the natural elements.



biodynamic agriculture



The tea of Makaibari Tea Estates is produced through biodynamic agriculture*, a method heralded by Australian philosopher Rudolf Steiner, whose teachings became the basis of anthroposophy. This type of agriculture not only avoids the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, it also incorporates the waxing and waning of the moon and the movements of celestial bodies in the cultivation of tea.

Plants are affected by
the waxing and waning of the moon,
in the same way that people are.

It is said that the sprouts of Silver Needles tea that have been picked on the day of the full moon carry the most vitality.

*Makaibari Tea Estates received certification for biodynamic agriculture from the Demeter Biodynamic Trade Association in 1993, and since then it has renewed this certification each year.

Kolkata Tea Auction Kolkata Tea Auction
Tea auctions do not just take place in India;
they are held worldwide.
Yet the largest and longest-running tea auction in the world
is the Kolkata Tea Auction.
It was started by the Thomas family
of the United Kingdom in 1861,
and today it is still run by the tea broker J. Thomas & Co.,
which has handed down its traditions over the years.

The tea auction takes place each week on Mondays and Tuesdays (and sometimes Wednesdays as well when there is a particularly large volume of trade), and it deals with the trade of an average of 8,000 tons of tea per day. The only people who are able to participate in the auctions are agents who can make bids for several tons of tea per day. Thus, the system is such that buyers request agents for teas from certain tea estates, and they then purchase the tealeaves from the agents that have made successful bids at the auction. (Makaibari Japan is an exclusive agent, so it deals directly with Makaibari Tea Estates.)

This is the assembly hall for Darjeeling tea. It was in this small assembly hall - which can only accommodate 100 people - that the legend of Silver Needles, the tea that fetched the highest price for any tea in history, was born.

This is the assembly hall for Assam tea. It is a large room that can seat 500 to 600 people, which shows that there is a lot of trading of Assam tea.

This man is a taster who has been employed at J. Thomas & Co. for many years. He tastes the tea in order to decide the trading price.

This auctioneer's gavel was hammered down at many pivotal moments in the history of tea in the world. It is stored at a museum that is adjacent to the auction building.


J. Thomas & Co. has carved out a history that spans over 150 years. It has not only spread Indian tea throughout the world, but it has also provided routes for tea estates all over India to sell their tealeaves at fair prices via tea auctions. The company also assesses the quality of tealeaves and offers advice to tea estates on how they can produce higher quality leaves.

On July 14, 2003, a surge of excitement ran over the assembly hall for the tea auction of J. Thomas & Co. This was the moment when a Darjeeling tea named "Silver Needles" fetched the highest price for any tea in history. The record remains unbroken to this day, and Silver Needles of the Makaibari Tea Estates continues to mesmerize tea fans worldwide as the highest echelon of tea in the world.

Silver Needles carries the highest grade of the teas produced at the Makaibari Tea Estates. According to the Steiner method of agriculture, which incorporates the movements of celestial bodies, it is said that the sprouts of tea that have been picked on the day of the full moon carry the most vitality. The Silver Needles is picked on the day of the full moon and produced using a hand-rolling method, thus making it super premium tea.

The tealeaves are imbued with vitality, and exude a refined aroma the moment they come into contact with hot water. The tealeaves then begin jumping, and as they open, the essence of the tea further deepens. This tea possesses a clear taste that is free from any off-flavors, and a wonderful flowery fragrance gently unfolds as it is sipped. An afterglow of the aroma of this luxurious tea remains in the nose for a short while even after the air has passed through. This is a creation that should be enjoyed while taking plenty of time.

Organic Darjeeling Te   All black, red, green, and oolong teas of the Makaibari Tea Estates in Darjeeling have received approval based on the amended Japan Agricultural Standards (JAS) for organic products. On February 17, 2001, Makaibari Tea Estates became the first company in Japan to receive organic product certification with regard to teas that are imported to Japan from overseas. This certification has been renewed each year since then.
